Betsy Graham became New Hanover County's Veteran Services Officer in June 2019. Prior to being promoted into this position, she was the county's Veterans Services Specialist for a year and provided administrative support and assisted Veterans and their dependents with managing Veteran benefits on the federal, state, and county level.
Betsy has more than nine years of experience in social work and working with Veterans. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from UNC Greensboro and a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Chicago.
While in Chicago, she interned with the Addiction Treatment Program at Hines VA Medical Center in a west suburb of Chicago, Illinois, and founded a student organization called Student Advocates for Veterans Association (SAVA). She also worked for Easter Seals UCP in Raleigh in the Intensive In-Home program providing crisis management, intensive case management, individual/family counseling, and skills training.
From 2013 to 2018, she was the Veteran Services Officer for Orange County's Department of Social Services in Hillsborough, NC. In addition to assisting Veterans and their families, she served as the co-event coordinator for the Orange County's DSS Toys 4 Tots/ Toy Chest program, served on the Veterans Day Breakfast committee and the Orange County Veterans memorial committee.
Betsy is a native of Pender County and the daughter of a retired Army Veteran. Her passion is to serve all people. However, after experiencing the deployment of her mother in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Betsy holds a special place in her heart for those who serve this country and those who love and support our servicemen and women.
When Betsy is not serving New Hanover County's Veterans and their family members, she enjoys spending quality time with her husband and three children.
